Music to a SOMETIMES OCD mom's ears

The Girl - "Hey, mommy!"

The Mommy - "What, honey?"

The Girl - "My lego people have a house, and it is VERY organized!"

The Mommy - pats herself on the back for a job well done. Part time OCD clone: check.

Reality Check

T: "I can't believe I'm almost nine!"

Mommy: Silence. Look of utter shock and SILENCE.

T: "What?! I WILL be nine in five months!"

Mommy: "I don't know if I'm ready for that yet, honey."

T: "Don't worry, mommy. I'll always be your baby girl."

AHA!

Yes, it's been ages, I know... Batman keeps mentioning this to me every time he gets on the computer. So, here's proof I AM, after all, still alive and well.

I thought I'd share an "Aha! moment" I had this Sunday. In the sermon, the statement was made, "faith is our opportunity to shut up, believe, and do." He then went on to say that God is NOT interested in our "but's..." I sat thinking, and realized that Bud is the PERFECT example of this for me. In fact, this is the very thing that we have been working on with our firstborn child. That desperate need to have our own opinion or reason heard, no matter what mommy or daddy (or GOD) has said. Hmm.......

"But, MOM, I an not cold!" (when it is -5° F outside and he has been told to put on a coat), or "but, MOM, I don't eat breakfast!!" (when told to eat so he could take his vitamins before getting involved with anything else so we could leave on time).

God: "Go, (do)."
Me: "But, GOD, I don't have enough time/resources/talent, I'm too tired, I'm not brave enough, etc."

Sound familiar? I am sure that every one of us could put any number of excuses there. Meanwhile, God sits there patiently waiting for me to shut up, believe and do. Someday (hopefully bery soon) I will learn to stop having a desperate need to have the last word and I will do just that - shut up, believe, and DO.

They say the darndest things....

Here is an excerpt from a conversation held recently on a trip to RCity:

Me: "***** is the only one that will be a stick in the mud about the idea. Otherwise, everyone will do it."

T: "Then maybe you guys should pull the stick out."

Hmm.... How does that work exactly?

"Awesome!!

My first black eye!!"

Yeah, that's how I looked at it too.... or not. My reaction was closer to: Oh. My. Gosh. WHAT. HAPPENED?! B was down at the neighbor/cousin's house playing "500" (no clue) and he got kneed in the eye by the resident girl teen/horse trainer of the family. Yikes. It already looks worse. This is what it looked like when he walked in the door:

Yeah. We'll see how it looks tomorrow.

At Least He Wants to Help

This morning we took the kids for their first trail ride.... A couple spills, but they are none the worse for wear. They did GREAT. The Boy loved it and the Girl would like to continue to blaze her way around the farm. She is a little less inclined to dive into something brand new... Even if it is just a new trail. While we were out riding, we passed our neighbors house and they were burning a small junk pile. How fun! We then returned home and got cleaned up and ate.

Just after lunchsupperdinner today, our fire company got toned out for a brush fire. I grabbed our gear and ran out the door and look up the hill.... And saw a HUGE column of billowing black smoke. I knew right where it was coming from... That little burning junk pile was now burning something that definitely should not be burning. I got to the fire hall and met J there (he had been on his way to work and turned around) and away we went along with the rest of our crew. Now, today was not overly warm, but in turnout gear at a fire on a hill hauling fire hoses, it is HOT. I called our cousin's/neighbor's house and asked them to send the Boy up to the top of the hill with water. I SO desperately needed a drink. However, somewhere in the message passing, there was a mix-up. Half an hour went by and I called back.... Is he coming with water? Several minutes later, the Boy called from his aunt's phone and asked if the fire company had gotten the fire out or did I still need him to bring water. "I only have five buckets full. Do I need to bring more?"

Um, Bud, I AM the fire company and I have a tanker and an engine and they work together to pump tons of water onto the fire... No, I don't need any buckets of water. But I sure would love a Nalgene filled with ice cold water if you could work that out for me.......

I Think I Can, I Think I Can, I Think I Can.... (Week Two)

Week two is over, and I'm down two more pounds.... which I have to admit disappoints me slightly. I know, five pounds a week would not necessarily be the healthiest, and two pounds is good, and actually, the "people whose methods I am using but meetings I am not attending" (and whose organization shall not be named) say that the average person will lose two pounds a week. So I'm on track, right? I am pretty sure that if this past week had not been birthday central in our family I would have done better... Birthday one involved cheesecake. Birthday two was butter roll and birthday three was regular old cake. All rather high on the points list. *sigh* But, I did it! I lost the average two pounds for the week and I am doing it the healthy way. You know what I am finding? I am actually CRAVING those carrots and the celery... J's cousin sent up a plate FULL of cake leftover from his birthday, and I don't want to even look at it! THAT is progress... I'm also looking forward to my time on the elliptical and all that follows every night. Getting there....

I have to admit, the Boy offered me quite a bit of incentive to keep going the other night.... We decided to order pizza (also high.... how did I lose anything this week????) and he looked at me as I was putting my piece of pizza on my plate and my three chicken wings and he said, "Wow, mom, you really are serious about this losing weight business, aren't you? What are you anyway, 200 pounds?" ....................... Just so you know, yes, he IS still alive. There is a miracle.

You Want to be a WHAT?

"Look mom! Did you see what I put in the flag holder by the door?? Now we can be like rednecks!"

Great, son, that's JUST what I want to do with my life. My great aspiration is to be a toothless redneck. Oh, I forgot to tell the rest of you? Shoot, I forgot to mention that!! Sorry!

Just to clear it all up, no, I do NOT want to be a redneck. Neither do my children. Nor does my husband, even though at times he acts like one.

Random thoughts...

... heard today over dinner with the in-laws (not to be confused with the outlaws):

*Disclaimer: Blog owner does not endorse or imply an approval of any particular comment made tonight. I just freely admit that I laughed my rear end off (too bad that isn't meant literally) and had tears streaming down my cheeks at various points over the course of our shared meal together.*

Yes, mom, I'm going to hire a prostitute.

There's too many fat people on this plane.

We're going to need more than a c-pap and ear plugs tonight.

I think I just lost five IQ points.

You're giving me a complex!

I don't get it, what's so funny??

Planning Ahead

Yesterday I fixed a roast chicken for lunchsupperdinner. I took the leftovers and made chicken salad for sandwiches and that is what the kids and I had for lun-whatever that is... our evening meal. T, being her sweet and oh-so-mommy-like self, told me that she absolutely LOVED her sandwich, it was the BEST thing I have ever made, etc. "Mom, you HAVE to give me this recipe when I grow up so I can make this for my kids." Ok, baby. I will try to remember. :o) Thank you.

Oh My

(AKA: New Definitions)

I seem to come in contact with a ton of these people:

Bozone (n): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and a(n)....... complete jerk..... (I cleaned that one up....)

Overheard Conversation

T: "My bed is really old."

B: "Is not."

T: "It is too!! Mom had it since she was a teenager!!"

B: "Yeah, but that wasn't that long ago."

T: "It was too! Mom's OLD."

B: "T, she is only 40. Forty isn't old."

Great. Frankly I am not really sure how to respond to that.
~Number one, my daughter thinks I am old... Ok, fine.... I thought my parents were old when I was T's age. I'll let that one go.
~Number two, B thinks I am 40 years old. He just aged me by over ten. *sigh* This day better get better.

Quote of the Day

After picking up a few logs in the woods and getting her hands dirty (we had literally been there for five minutes) T said, "I think it is time for my Royal Bath." I think I might have a Royal Pain on my hands.....

And while we were downtown, Daddy Dearest bought a coke for JT and T to share. JT had a few sips and then handed the bottle to his Royal Sister and told her she could have the rest. Her response? "Sweet! Now I can back spit all I want!" Um, ew. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Phone Conversations

I discovered something today... My little girl has a penchant for exaggeration.

She is chatting on the phone with her Uncle D in a land far far away
and I hear, "sometimes I stay up til four in the morning." Uh, no, honey, once in a while we get you UP at four in the morning. "We started school late today cause mommy let us sleep in cause we were up til midnight last night celebrating daddy's birthday." No, again, baby girl. Mommy and Daddy would have been PASSED OUT if we were up til midnight. It was more like 10:00. Still too late. Other than our sleeping habits, she did get the majority of her other facts straight. Despite the deer in the headlights look on her face, she was thrilled to be able to talk to Uncle D and Aunt E.
